38 Thai professionals trained on lifecycle carbon assessment with BEAT

At a workshop in Bangkok, government officials, developers, architects, contractors and energy auditors assessed real buildings with BEAT, the lifecycle carbon assessment tool HEAT develops for the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition project.

Once a building is completed, the carbon embodied in its concrete, steel and glass is fixed for the lifetime of the structure. Design and procurement are the only stages at which those emissions can still be reduced, which is why practical assessment skills matter more than reporting requirements in fast-urbanising markets.

At Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, 38 stakeholders worked hands-on with BEAT, the Building Emission Assessment Tool. Participants learned to calculate embodied and operational carbon across a building’s lifecycle, interpret the results, and apply the tool to practical building assessments. The group covered government, building development and ownership, architecture and design, contracting, energy auditing and energy service companies, which is the range of actors needed to move lifecycle assessment into everyday design and procurement decisions.

HEAT is the technical lead for BEAT within the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) project. HEAT developed the assessment methodology, adapting EN 15978 to Asian building typologies and climate zones, built the underlying Environmental Product Declaration database, and published the BEAT Handbook Part 1 in April 2025.

Nearly 300 Thai professionals have taken ALCBT’s Low-Carbon Building Transition Development Pathway courses since December 2025. The project aims to train 770 professionals by August 2027.

ALCBT runs from 2023 to 2028 in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. It is implemented by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as lead, together with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and HEAT GmbH, and funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

Further BEAT training rounds are planned across the five ALCBT countries.
