Energy-efficient, ozone- and climate-friendly “green cooling” is urgently needed worldwide. The application fields of natural refrigerants, such as ammonia, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide are increasing steadily, facilitating the use of these substances. However, due to flammability and toxicity issues, security is a key factor users must be aware of. This publication was prepared in the framework of the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan (HPMP) and illustrates relevant aspects and case studies of the use of natural refrigerants in commercial refrigeration systems.
