Socio-Economic Study on Maritime Defossilisation and Green Shipping in South Africa

Category: Sustainable transport
Status: ongoing
Country: South Africa

Context

This project assesses the current state of South Africa’s maritime transport sector and its integration into global markets, identifying opportunities for greener shipping practices. By analyzing trade data from South African ports and consulting stakeholders, the study will provide actionable recommendations for advancing sustainable maritime initiatives, including green hydrogen use. The research will include desktop analysis, quantitative socio-economic assessments, and support of the development of training materials and policy briefs.

Main activities

Key work packages include:

  • a detailed assessment of the sector’s regulatory landscape, economic contribution, and its connection to global trade, particularly focusing on the impact of regional policies like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Key stakeholders across governance, commerce, and communities and their roles in promoting green shipping will be identified.
  • a socio-economic analysis to evaluate South Africa’s potential to become a hub for green shipping fuels, examining the economic and social benefits of transitioning to green maritime practices.
  • practical recommendations for implementing Power-to-X (PtX) technologies to support the sector’s decarbonization.

Findings will be shared through workshops and engagement sessions with stakeholders to ensure actionable outcomes.
